Magnolia Brown has grown up onboard a sailing theatre, plying the river from town to town to entertain people, dreaming of a life on stage. When the show’s star, Julie La Verne, is revealed to have part African-American ancestry, she is forced to leave the company - taking her husband and the show’s leading man with her. In this moment of crisis, Magnolia finds herself promoted to Julie’s place where she must appear opposite Gaylord Ravenal, a handsome gambler and rogue who Magnolia soon falls for.
